Publishing Your Genealogy to the Web

Most genealogists and family historians dream of someday compiling and publishing their years of research for their children, children's children, near and distant cousins, and so on. Rather than wait until your research is done (which it never really is), you can now easily create a living Web site to grow, share, and expand your family's histories in ways that fulfill your needs and wants.

The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding - i.e. TNG - is the world's preeminent software for creating custom, feature-rich, expandable, and secure family history Web sites. TNG allows you to vastly exceed all conventional publishing methods.

For example, with TNG, you can:

  • Grow one or more family trees without any size limitations
  • Maintain adherence to good research and compilation practices
  • Manage vast amounts of media (documents, photos, audio and video)
  • Display family events using detailed online maps, such as Google Maps and Google Earth
  • Synchronize your online database with your desktop genealogy program
  • Protect your valuable information through various security policies
  • Decide who is entitled to read, contribute, and modify which information
  • Require visitors to register and login prior to having access to your site (or not)
  • Modify your family trees and data without having to regenerate and upload new HTML files
  • Apply any of a number of beautiful and stylish templates
  • Customize your site’s template (structure and layout) in unlimited ways
  • Add nearly any other existing Web technology to your site
  • Apply vast social networking tools that lead to richer user experiences
  • Not have to know any computer programming to manage your site
  • Share as little or as much of your research with as few or as many persons as you like
  • Create a comprehensive family history association presence to attract more cousins
  • Allow easy and painless uploads and downloads of GEDCOM files
  • Create custom reports of individual and family findings
  • Ensure that your findings are picked up by search engines for maximum exposure
  • Maintain separate databases of individuals, families, locations, cemeteries, and many more
  • Continue your research indefinitely while sharing it today
  • You to control everything. I repeat, . . .a Web site that allows you to control everything!

In other words, you can have it all and just the way that you want it!

About TNG-Resources.com

Hello! My name is John Pfost, and this site is devoted to promoting and supporting the vast capabilities of TNG. Web-based technologies are truly remarkable. And yet they can also be somewhat complex and daunting. Thus, TNG-Resources.com was created with the intent of becoming a resource for learning and applying Web technologies.

What began as a simple portal to promote the Webmaster's Guide to TNG is evolving into a much more comprehensive resource for all family history Web site developers. Following the release of the TNG book, I have been steadily adding articles and short papers about the various technologies related to TNG. You can access many of these by subscribing to the TNG-Resources newsletter in the left column.

More recently, I have completed and released the Webmaster's Guide to cPanel, which I feel is the most current and comprehensive resource available for this remarkable Web development tool. If you are actively developing a family history (or any) Web site, cPanel is an invaluable tool for creating and managing your site.

Please take a few minutes to browse this site. Besides the additional information on TNG and cPanel, you can read more about the author and what others are saying about these resources. You should also review the Additional Resources section at the bottom of this page to discover what is available by subscribing to the TNG-Resources newsletter.

Best regards,

John Pfost

About the Webmaster's Guide to TNG

TNG book cover

The Webmaster's Guide to TNG shows genealogists and family historians how to create and manage their own dynamic genealogy Web site using a commercial software program, The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding (TNG). Unlike conventional genealogy site development applications, TNG utilizes cutting-edge technologies – MySQL database and PHP scripting language – to create stunning, practical, secure, and customizable Web sites. TNG is bundled with a number of ready-made templates for quick setup of your site. For those who want more control and flexibility, the source code is included and users are allowed – even encouraged – to customize their sites in unlimited ways.

If you are completely new to these technologies, there are a couple of introductory papers on TNG available from the Resources page when you subscribe.
